ACSOT, in Partnership with the Tigray Bureau of Finance and Resource Coordination, Hosts GO–CSO Forum in Mekelle

In a collaborative effort to enhance cooperation between government bodies and civil society organizations (CSOs), the Alliance of Civil Society Organizations of Tigray (ACSOT), in coordination with the Tigray Bureau of Finance and Resource Coordination, convened a Government–Civil Society Forum on July,03/2025 in Mekelle.

The forum aimed to strengthen partnership, foster accountability, and coordinate resource utilization among governmental structures and civil society actors in Tigray. It served as a platform for open dialogue on how resources mobilized by CSOs can effectively reach and benefit the communities, and to identify practical solutions to existing operational challenges

During the Forum General Tadesse Worede, President of the Tigray Interim Administration, delivered a keynote address in which he emphasized the government’s commitment to ensuring proper management and transparency in handling the humanitarian and development resources entering the region. He acknowledged the crucial role of CSOs and NGOs in mobilizing resources that support reconstruction and development efforts. General Tadesse underlined the importance of aligning these resources with the actual needs of the people and pledged the government’s cooperation in identifying and responding to community priorities.

Dr. Mihret Beyene, Head of the Tigray Bureau of Finance and Resource Coordination, highlighted the immense need for coordinated resource mobilization to rebuild the infrastructure and social services destroyed by the war. She noted that the forum is an important mechanism to ensure that resources channeled through CSOs are not only properly tracked but also effectively translated into tangible community-level outcomes. She stressed the importance of joint action to overcome resource delivery challenges.

Additionally, Mr. Samson Biratu, Director of the Federal Civil Society Authority, acknowledged the vibrancy of the civil society sector in Ethiopia, noting that over 8,000 civil society organizations are currently registered and operational across the country. He emphasized the need for synergy between national and regional actors in order to maximize the impact of CSO interventions.

Finally, Dr. Yikaalo Welu, Director of the Tigray Civil Society Authority, pointed out the severe and multidimensional crises facing the people of Tigray as a result of the genocidal war. He expressed concern over the growing political tensions among regional actors, cautioning that these divisions could hinder recovery and peacebuilding efforts. Dr. Yikaalo emphasized ACSOT’s position in advocating for peaceful dialogue and reconciliation, and called on all stakeholders to prioritize peace, unity, healing, and sustainable development.
