Alliance of Civil Society Organizations of Tigray (ACSOT) successfully organized a CSO Leadership Experience Sharing and Peer Learning Forum at Desta Hotel in Mekelle, bringing together civil society leaders and executives to reflect on leadership experiences, organizational resilience, partnership building, and the future of the civil society sector.
The forum featured a panel discussion with experienced civil society leaders Yirga Gebrezgabher, Ashenafi Asmelash, Sr. Medhin Tesfay, and Biniam Nadew, moderated by Dawit Merhatsidik.
The event provided a platform for open dialogue, knowledge exchange, and peer learning among CSO leaders and practitioners. During the discussion, panelists shared their professional journeys, organizational histories, and the challenges and achievements that shaped their leadership experiences. They reflected on key turning points in their careers and discussed how those experiences influenced their approaches to leadership and organizational management.
A major focus of the forum was leadership in fragile and rapidly changing environments. Panelists explored how effective leadership requires adaptability, resilience, and the ability to maintain staff motivation, organizational culture, and performance during periods of uncertainty and limited resources. They emphasized that strong leadership is not only about strategic direction but also about supporting people and fostering trust within organizations. The discussion also highlighted the importance of team building, time management, and organizational culture in achieving sustainable results. Drawing from practical experiences, panelists shared insights on creating positive work environments where staff can grow, collaborate effectively, and contribute meaningfully to organizational goals.
Participants benefited from valuable lessons on mentoring emerging leaders, managing competing priorities, building professional relationships, and creating conditions that enable teams to thrive. Panelists encouraged young and aspiring CSO leaders to invest in continuous learning, relationship building, integrity, and effective time management.
Recognizing the growing importance of collaboration in development and humanitarian work, the forum examined strategies for building and sustaining partnerships among civil society organizations, government institutions, communities, donors, foundations, and private-sector actors. Panelists shared practical examples demonstrating how collaboration can produce results that would be difficult for a single organization to achieve independently.
The discussion concluded with reflections on the future of the civil society sector. Panelists identified emerging challenges, including evolving humanitarian contexts, changing funding landscapes, and increasing demands for organizational effectiveness and accountability. At the same time, they highlighted opportunities for innovation, stronger partnerships, local leadership, and greater collaboration among stakeholders.
The forum was held under the theme “Sharing Experience, Strengthening Leadership, Building Impact Together,” reinforcing ACSOT’s commitment to promoting peer learning, strengthening leadership capacity, and fostering a resilient and impactful civil society sector in Tigray.
ACSOT extends its appreciation to all panelists, participants, and partners whose contributions made the event a valuable learning and networking opportunity for the civil society community.
